Most carbon mirror covers sold for the G87 are caps — a carbon shell bonded over the factory housing you already have.
These are complete replacement units. The factory housing comes off and the carbon unit takes its place, built from autoclaved 2x2 pre-preg dry carbon fiber. Sold as a matched pair, driver and passenger side, finished together so the weave and gloss match left to right.

Pre-preg carbon arrives with the resin already impregnated into the weave at a controlled ratio, so no resin is added by hand during layup — that is what makes it dry carbon. Curing it under heat and pressure in an autoclave consolidates the laminate and drives out trapped air that would otherwise show as flaws in the finished surface. Other processes introduce the resin at the mold, so the ratio is set during layup rather than before it.
A mirror housing is a compound-curved shell with no flat reference anywhere on it, and it sits at eye level on both sides of the car. Any difference between left and right is on display every time you check a mirror, which is why the pair is laid up and finished as a set rather than pulled from stock.
