The center section of the M5's front bumper is gloss-black plastic doing an impression of a premium detail. It sits dead center on the face of the car, and it's the first thing that dates the front end.
Built from autoclaved 2x2 pre-preg dry carbon fiber, this trim is a direct OEM replacement for the factory part: same opening, same mounting points, same hardware. It reads as something from BMW's own options list rather than an aftermarket add-on.
Sits directly above the Carbon Fiber Front Spoiler and beside the Dry Carbon Mirror Covers. All three are in the Carbon Fiber Aero Bundle. Directly behind it, the Dry Carbon Radiator Cooling Shroud continues the same carbon with the hood up.
Pre-preg carbon arrives with the resin already impregnated into the weave at a controlled ratio, so no resin is added by hand during layup — that is what makes it dry carbon. Curing it under heat and pressure in an autoclave consolidates the laminate and drives out trapped air that would otherwise show as flaws in the finished surface. Other processes introduce the resin at the mold, so the ratio is set during layup rather than before it.
On a part this close to eye level and this flat, surface consistency is the whole product. A pinhole or a ripple in the weave has nowhere to hide in the middle of the bumper.
